For part six of our series on color and as we near the end of the color wheel and rainbow we find ourselves in the Blue and Blue-Violet range of colors. Blue is the color of the sea and sky and it is also a primary color and is therefore especially flattering on everyone.
However, just as with all colors not all blue and blue-violets are equal in chroma (brightness) and value (depth). So, having the exact right shades for your seasonal color type in your wardrobe is important.

The meanings behind these two colors also known as color psychology are good to know because when you put on any color you are actually sending a message or evoking a certain emotional response.
Wear blue or blue-violet if you want to come across as…
- Cool and calm
- Peaceful and intelligent
- Trustworthy, authoritative
If you have blue eyes the blueness of them will be more pronounced when you wear these colors and if you are a brunette or have brown eyes they will also be enhanced since blue is opposite orange on the color wheel it complements these undertones.
The Best Winter Blues and Blue-Violets
I have always thought that Winters look exceptionally stunning in the blues from their palette. There is just something about the way it harmonizes with their coloring.
Blue is the main undertone in the cool seasons so that’s probably why. Some Winters are lucky enough to have blue-violet eyes such as Elizabeth Taylor.
As with most of the colors in the Winter Palette, the blues are intense (high chroma) and mostly deep in value.
The best shades for this deep and cool season are as follows –
- Very deep dark blue (not as dark as navy)
- Deep Blue-Violet
- Deep True Blue
- Sapphire Blue
- Twilight Blue
- Bright Periwinkle
- Winter Sky Blue
- Bright Iced Electric Blue
You will see these colors during this season reflected in the sky as evening approaches and in the mornings as the sun begins to rise and in the waters of the ocean and deep glacial lakes.
The Best Blue and Blue-Violet for Springs
Even though Spring is a mostly warm season it also contains some blue. As I stated earlier blue is a primary color so you will find it in every season. The Spring blues and blue-violets are bright and medium to medium-deep. They are similar in intensity to those found in the Winter palette but they are just not as deep in value.
Spring’s best hues –
- Bright Blue-Violet
- Medium-Deep True Blue
- Peacock Blue
- Cornflower Blue
- Bright Indigo
- Spring Sky Blue
You will find these lovely colors in the flowers, sky, feathers of migrating birds, and cool clear waters of Springtime.
The Best Summer Blues and Blue-Violets
Since Summer is another cool-based season they also look very elegant in the shades from their palette. The colors are medium to medium-deep in value and medium in chroma (brightness).
The best shades of blue for Summer are –
- Dusty Blue-Violet
- True Blue
- Indigo Blue
- Summer Sky Blue
look for these colors in the waters, clear or stormy skies, blooming flowers, and ripe berries found in the summertime.
The Best Blues and Blue-Violets for Autumns
This is the one time of year that you don’t see much of this primary color. Autumn is one of the darkest seasons and it also contains more warm colors than any other season in comparison so it’s not too surprising. However, the blues it does contain are beautiful and add just the right pop of bright coolness. The colors are medium to medium-deep in value and chroma.
Autumn’s best blues include –
- Bright Periwinkle
- Deep Autumn Sky Blue
Look for these in the crisp clear skies, glassy lakes, and blooming asters of Autumn.
How to Wear Blue and Blue-Violet for Your Season
You can use this very versatile primary color in a number of ways for fashion or even makeup. Blue is opposite Orange and Blue-Violet is opposite Yellow-Orange on the color wheel, which is why these shades are especially flattering to anyone with brown hair and/or brown eyes since orange and yellow are the base colors of most browns.
Use the blues and blue-violets from your palette for –
- Dresses and Formalwear
- Suits, Jackets/Coats
- Shoes, Ties. Belts, Jewelry, and other Accessories
- Eyeshadow, Eye Liner, Mascara, Nail Polish
Winters look gorgeous in deep blue eyeliner and Summers look great in Navy mascara. Springs can pull off bright blue eyeliner as long as it has a warm undertone and blue-violet eye makeup will make any eye color pop.
