Skincare 101: How to Choose a Facial Moisturizer Skincare 101: How to Choose a Facial Moisturizer

Posted on by Valora Abbett

I personally have the most trouble finding a good moisturizer that works with my skin. I have sensitive skin and live in a hot humid climate. The struggle is real. Haha. This is why it is key to not only know one's skin type but the current condition of it as I stated in my post about determining skin types. The environment we live in plays a big role in how our skin behaves. This is why most skincare quizzes ask you what type of climate you live in and whether you live in a city or a more rural area. City dwellers are more subject to environmental pollution whereas someone who lives in the countryside usually is not. This is one of many reasons to use a skin type-appropriate moisturizer daily to help nourish and protect your skin.

Best Facial Moisturizers for Normal and Combination Skin Types

Look for light creams or lotions that are fragrance-free or only very lightly scented using natural ingredients. Key ingredients to look for are as follows -

  • Light oils - grape seed, sunflower seed, almond, apricot, hemp seed
  • Humectants - aloe, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, glycerine, seaweed
  • Antioxidants - vitamin c, vitamin e, fruit extracts, green tea

Best Facial Moisturizers for Oily Skin

This may surprise you, but oily skin needs moisture too in order to stay healthy. In fact, if you don't moisturize oily skin it can become dehydrated which causes the already overproducing oil glands to produce even more oil. You are then left with even oilier skin that also looks dull and feels rough. Not a pleasant combination. Excess dead skin cells can build as a result which can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, and pimples. You get the idea.

The best moisturizers for oily skin are either completely oil-free or contain very lightweight oils that are non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and easily absorbed. Looks for formulas that contain the following ingredients -

  • Humectants - aloe juice, hyaluronic acid, glycerine, sodium PCA, seaweed extract, allantoin, watermelon extract
  • Acne fighting ingredients - tea tree oil, sulfur, salicylic acid (always used in conjunction with a sunscreen), Niacinamide
  • Lightweight oils (if skin tolerates it) - grape seed, jojoba, hemp seed, sunflower seed

Best Facial Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Dry skin needs lots of moisture and hydration, so you will want to look for heavier ingredients that will really help seal, protect, and prevent transepidermal water loss from occurring. Look for creams or lotions that contain -

      • Nourishing oils - olive, avocado, jojoba, safflower, rosehip seed, evening primrose, hemp seed, squalane
      • Butters - cocoa seed, shea butter, kokum
      • Waxes - beeswax, Candelilla, carnauba, rice bran, laurel wax
      • Anti-aging ingredients - collagen, peptides, tea extracts, grapeseed extract, Coenzyme Q10, cholesterol, Resveratrol
      • Humectants - aloe vera, glycerine, sodium PCA, hyaluronic acid, seaweed/algae extracts

       Best Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin

Fragrance-free non-irritating formulas are a must. They can be oil-free or not. Ingredients to look for are -

      • Soothing and hydrating - chamomile extract, calendula, allantoin, aloe vera, honey, colloidal oatmeal, hyaluronic acid, glycerine, cucumber extract, eyebright, Niacinamide
      • Light oils and butters - shea butter, cucumber seed oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil
      • Antioxidant ingredients - peptides, collagen, cholesterol, vitamin e, Resveratrol, MSM
      • Waxes - beeswax, Candelilla, carnauba

The bottom line is that using an appropriate moisturizer for your skin type daily is a must and it should be a regular part of your skincare routine in order for you to have happy and healthy skin.
