I missed watching the Golden Globes this year so just recently when I was combing through all of the photos of the attendees I was really impressed by not only the amount of color I saw on this year’s red carpet but also by how many celebrities actually wore their correct colors.
I am sure there have already been a ton of articles published on who was the best and worst dressed, etc but I still wanted to give my analysis from a color analyst’s perspective. Better late than never, right? 🙂
These are my top picks for the best-dressed celebs from this year’s 76th annual Golden Globes based on correct colors and texture. I am not going to go into trends or anything like that since that’s not the focus of this particular article.
What I want to focus on here is giving you a better idea of the range of coloring you can find in the different seasonal color types and how amazing you can look when you wear the right colors.
So without further adieu let’s get to it!
Actress Gemma Chan looked absolutely gorgeous in this deep rich blue Valentino Haute Couture gown and matching shoes. This color is in the Winter palette and really compliments Gemma’s beautiful dark hair and medium rose-beige complexion. The diamond earrings and true red lip help pull the whole look together.
The only thing that would have made this look even better is if the dress were in a shinier material. Winters can handle a lot of sparkle and shine so that is the one small change that I would have made. She still looks amazing though so well done to her stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray.
British actress Emily Blunt is a lovely Summer with rosy-beige skin, blue-gray eyes, and medium brown hair that she highlights blonde. She wore this beautiful soft silver gown with metallic beading designed by Sarah Burton who is the current creative director for Alexander McQueen.
This is a perfect example of how great a neutral color can look. By adding a lot of texture it brings up the visual interest so that it is anything but blah. It has just the right amount of sparkle for her seasonal color type.
Makeup artist Jenn Streicher completed the look by applying soft silver eye makeup and rosy pink tones to her lips and cheeks.
Chrissy is one of the stars of the hit show This is Us and she looked absolutely stunning in this custom designed geranium red gown by Tanya Taylor. I wasn’t completely sure of her season until I saw this photo. Only a Spring can pull off wearing this particular shade of red. Her ivory skin looks clear and glowing, the golden highlights in her hair shine, and her gray eyes sparkle.
The crystal beadwork on the sleaves and on her shoes add some extra glitz. I love how her makeup artist used a deeper red color on her lips and nails, also from the Spring palette. Well done to her stylist Penny Lovell.
Amy is a beautiful Autumn with pale apricot skin, light auburn hair, and warm gray eyes. This off the shoulder teal dress by Calvin Klein is such a great color on her! The slightly velvety texture of the material combined with her gold and diamond jewelry and peachy makeup is just perfect.
Lupita is a beautiful Winter so this heavily beaded sheath dress by Raf Simons’ for Calvin Klein in a bright blue-violet with silver accents is a great look for her. She also wore diamond jewelry, sparkly purple eyeshadow, and a shiny red lip. Simply stunning against her deep cocoa complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. Nothing looks out of place or overwhelming. Kudos to her stylist Micaela Erlanger!
Canadian actress Patricia Clarkson’s beautiful Spring coloring really stood out in this elegant coral red gown with fuschia accents by Georges Chakra Couture. These colors really harmonize with her lovely pale peach complexion and light strawberry blonde hair. I mean – wow!
Actress Camilla Belle looked stunning as always in this custom deep blue and emerald green brocade gown by designer Jason Wu. Camilla is a Winter with black-brown hair, deep hazel eyes, and light rose-beige skin.
Makeup artist Hung Vanngo created an absolutely gorgeous emerald green eye look that really made her hazel eyes shine and tied the whole look together.
The lip and cheek colors were a little too warm and peachy. A rosier pink undertone would have been more flattering to her overall cool coloring but she still looked gorgeous nonetheless.
The Good Place actress Kristen Bell stunned in this pale rose gown by Zuhair Mohad and silver and diamond jewelry. Kristen is a Summer with golden blonde hair, medium beige skin, and blue-gray eyes. The soft rose makeup compliments her lovely complexion perfectly.
It just goes to show that you don’t have to wear really bold and bright colors to make a statement. Simply wearing the right colors from your color palette whether it be a pastel or a bright is all you need.
Like Kristen Bell, actress Emma Stone also went for a more subdued yet stunning look this year by opting to wear a nude-peach gown with silver crystal beading by Louis Vuitton Atelier. Her makeup artist created a beautiful look with metallic rose-gold eyeshadows and peachy pink lips and cheeks.
If you are wondering what Emma’s season is, she is a Spring and while most of the colors in the Spring palette are bright and bold it also contains warm pastels that look just as stunning especially when combined with metallic or jeweled accents as can be seen above.
One of the few Autumns I spotted on this year’s red carpet, Halle looks gorgeous in this sheer deep warm red gown with lace accents by designer Zuhair Murad. I love the warm muted gold highlights in her hair as well. I just wish her makeup stood out more.
It’s a bit too nude in my opinion. More bronze or copper with a hint of that deep red would have complimented the color of her dress better. Unfortunately, that lip color just makes her face disappear. Still a great look overall, though.
Actress and comedian Melissa McCarthy who was nominated for her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? looked elegant in a bright purple gown with silver star accents by designer Reem Acra. Seeing her in this very bold color confirmed for me that she is definitely a Winter.
The bright pink lip and cheek she wore also looks great. Which again only looks this vibrant, healthy, and natural on someone who is truly a Winter. I am a Summer so if I tried to wear these colors I would look totally overwhelmed and like I had way too much blush on.
I would like to point out that Melissa’s overall contrast level is medium so I can see how she could easily be mistaken for a Summer. This is why trying on a lot of different colors is so important. Not everyone has the typical coloring for their seasonal color type. As I have stated before – the comparison is key!
Australian actress and one of the stars of The Handmaid’s Tale (which is an amazing show so if you haven’t seen it definitely check it out) Yvonne Strahovski is gorgeous in this mint green strapless chiffon gown by designer Alberta Ferretti and peachy-pink makeup.
She is a beautiful Spring and her light warm coloring is flattered by these bright pastel hues from the Spring color palette.
On the deeper end of the spectrum, we have another Spring – actor, and singer MJ Rodriguez who wore an electric blue gown by designer Prabal Gurung with matching eyeliner and the effect is just wow!
Even though MJ’s contrast level is higher than Yvonne’s they both look equally good in the colors from the Spring palette due to the high chroma (brightness) in their overall coloring. They could swap outfits and still look just as good.
Actress Lucy Boynton looked like a golden goddess in this custom antique gold gown from designer Celine and mauve makeup. Lucy is a Summer and therefore looks best in softer metallics so this dress was perfect. It’s just the right amount of shine for her softer coloring.
Journalist Natalie Morales glowed in this bright red-orange halter neck gown by designerMaria Lucia Hohan. This very warm red really looks great against her bronzey skin and hair. This is how Autumn’s do bold. While Autumn’s color palette is darker overall than Spring or Summer, in general, it still contains quite a few very bright colors like this one.
So, if you are an Autumn don’t be fooled into thinking that you can only wear deep muted earthy tones. As you can see from the example above that is simply not true.
Actress and Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) went for a bold sunny look in this absolutely beautiful bright marigold yellow silk dress from Prada. I recently wrote an article all about how to wear yellow for your seasonal color type and ladies this is how you do it!
Rachel is a dark-haired Spring so this bright warm yellow is perfect for her. Her skin tone looks so smooth and glowing, her eyes are bright and sparkling. This is the power of color.
Adam Driver and Joanne Tucker
Last but not least I wanted to go over this couple – Actor Adam Driver (Girls, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and his wife actress Joanne Tucker. Adam is a Winter and Joanne is a Summer. They are both dressed in their correct colors and look fantastic.
Even though Adam’s coloring is much darker than his wife’s he’s not overpowering her or hogging the spotlight so to speak because she is shining just as bright in her lovely light and soft Summer pastels. Again, this is why it is so important to wear your right colors.
I hope all of these examples have been helpful and have given you some ideas for how to dress for your seasonal color type.
